KANNA ā The Happy HapĆ©
Some medicines take you somewhere else. Kanna helps you feel better right where you are.
Kanna HapƩ was created around a simple but powerful intention: to help you feel more like yourself on your best days. The days when your thoughts are kinder, your energy feels lighter, conversation comes naturally, and the ordinary problems of life seem a little less capable of consuming your attention.
At the heart of this blend is a highly concentrated extract of Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum), the legendary South African plant traditionally valued for elevating mood, easing tension, encouraging connection, and bringing awareness back into the present moment.
Because the Kanna extract we used in this hape is highly concentrated, only a small amount is needed in the formula. This preserves the strength and character of the ancestral forest base, creating a powerful balance of grounding and upliftment, cleansing and connection, calmness and energy.
This is the Happy HapƩ.
Feel your Best, Everyday
There are days when everything simply feels easier.
You laugh more freely. Music sounds better. Conversation flows. You feel interested in the people around you. Your mind is not searching for the next problem, and you are able to appreciate the life that is actually happening in front of you.
This is the space Kanna is known for.
Rather than simply stimulating or sedating, Kanna can create a unique state of calm activation. The mind becomes quieter while the body feels more alive. Worries may loosen their grip while motivation, creativity, and engagement increase.
For many people, the beauty of Kanna is that it does not necessarily make them feel like someone different. It can simply make them feel like a lighter, happier, more open version of themselves.
The Social & Empathogenic Medicine
Kanna is often described as an empathogenic plant medicine. An empathogen is a substance associated with greater emotional openness, empathy, warmth, trust, and connection with others.
This is one of Kannaās most distinctive qualities.
Kanna can act as a natural social lubricant, helping conversation feel easier and shared moments more engaging. It may encourage emotional openness while reducing the self-conscious mental chatter that can prevent us from being fully present with another person.
Whether spending time with friends, sharing a meaningful conversation with someone you love, going on a date, enjoying music, connecting with nature, or simply wanting to feel more available to the world around you, Kanna encourages a simple shift:
Less time trapped inside your head. More time truly here.
Calm Energy. Clear Mind. Open Heart.
One of Kannaās most fascinating qualities is the balance it can create between relaxation and activation.
Rather than pushing the body into overstimulation or pulling it toward sedation, Kanna is known for a smoother middle path: calm focus, steady energy, greater mental clarity, and an increased sense of engagement with the present moment.
The result can feel like being relaxed and energized at the same time. Thoughts may become less repetitive, attention more flexible, and everyday experiences more interesting and emotionally vivid.
This combination makes Kanna HapƩ uniquely versatile. It can complement focused work and creativity just as naturally as meditation, music, time in nature, or meaningful social connection.
The Kanna Experience
When received nasally, the concentrated Kanna in this blend can be experienced rapidly. Within the first few minutes, some users notice a rising sensation of energy moving through the body. For sensitive individuals, this initial activation may briefly resemble nervous excitement or anxious energy.
This transition is important to understand. Excitement and anxiety create the same sensations in the body - the only difference is your perception. When the energy begins to rise, remain grounded and allow the experience to unfold without resistance.
As the initial activation settles, often within approximately 30 minutes or less, the character of the experience begins to soften and open deeper. Many users describe feeling more content, positive, socially open, and present. Thoughts may become less repetitive, lifeās difficulties less consuming, and conversation and shared experiences more emotionally rewarding.
The most noticeable effects may continue for several hours. Some users also report a softer positive shift in mood and perspective that remains all day, even after the primary effects have subsided.
As with any compound that interacts with your unique biochemistry, experiences may vary according to sensitivity, dose, mindset, and setting.
Why I Had to Share This Medicine
I first discovered Kanna only a few months before creating this blend, and within minutes of my first experience, I understood why this plant has been treasured for generations.
I felt a surge of energy rise through my body, followed by a warm opening around my heart. I felt clearer, more loving, more content, and genuinely happy. But what surprised me most was how natural it felt. I didnāt feel like a different person. I simply felt like myself on one of my best days.
By the end of that first experience, I knew I had to share this medicine.
I began introducing Kanna to friends while continuing to work with it myself. One friend became two, then five, and eventually around 20 people. Again and again, I watched people have remarkably similar reactions: āWow.ā āThis is amazing.ā People seemed lighter, more present, more engaged, and more open to connection.
One story has stayed with me most. A friend told me that nearly every time he worked with Kanna, he found himself picking up his guitar. Music had once been one of his greatest passions, but between work, raising children, and the responsibilities of life, he had not played in more than a year. He described Kanna as bringing him back into contact with his heart and his feelings, and from there, he naturally returned to something he loved.
That experience captures what I find most special about this plant - it connects you to your heart.Ā
Sometimes the happiest version of ourselves isnāt gone. Weāve simply become disconnected from it.
After months of personally working with Kanna in quiet moments, creative settings, intimate connection, and social gatherings, this remains the best way I can describe it:
Kanna helps me feel more like my true self. My best self. The person I am on my best days.
That is why I created The Happy HapƩ, and why I am so excited to finally share it with you.

Tradition & Indigenous Wisdom
Kanna, or Sceletium tortuosum, is a succulent plant native to Southern Africa with a long history of use among the San and Khoikhoi peoples.
Traditionally prepared Kanna was often fermented, dried, and chewed, giving rise to the name kougoed, commonly translated as āsomething to chew.ā Historical and ethnobotanical records also document other forms of preparation and use.
Kanna was traditionally valued during long journeys and periods of physical demand, and historical accounts associate the plant with easing tension, elevating mood, supporting endurance, and encouraging social connection. Its place in traditional life existed at the intersection of medicine, resilience, community, and consciousness.
Today, modern science is beginning to investigate biological mechanisms that may help explain aspects of this longstanding traditional relationship with the plant.
Kanna HapƩ brings this joy of African plant lineage into conversation with the sacred HapƩ traditions of the Amazon, creating a unique meeting of two plant traditions centered around presence, clarity, resilience, and connection.
The Science of Kanna: Active Compounds & Measurable Effects
For centuries, Kannaās effects were understood through direct experience. Today, modern neuroscience is beginning to reveal what may be happening beneath the surface.
Kanna contains a unique family of mesembrine alkaloids, including mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, and mesembranol. Research suggests that standardized Kanna extracts interact with the serotonin transporter, or SERT, and phosphodiesterase-4, or PDE4, two pathways associated with emotional processing, stress response, and cognitive function.
A Quieter Response to Stress and Threat
One of the most fascinating studies on Kanna used functional brain imaging to observe its effects in real time. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers found that a single 25 mg dose of standardized Kanna extract reduced reactivity in the amygdala, a region deeply involved in detecting and responding to perceived threat. The study also found reduced coupling between the amygdala and hypothalamus during threat processing.
In simple terms, the research suggests that Kanna may influence how strongly the brain reacts to stressful or threatening information. This provides a fascinating biological framework for one of the plantās most commonly described qualities: a quieter mind that remains awake, engaged, and present.
Cognitive Flexibility & Executive Function
Kanna may do more than influence how we feel. Research suggests that it may also influence how flexibly we think.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 21 healthy adults took 25 mg of standardized Kanna extract daily for three weeks. Compared with placebo, Kanna produced statistically significant improvements in cognitive set flexibility and executive function, with positive changes in mood and sleep also reported.
Cognitive flexibility is our ability to shift perspectives, adapt to changing situations, and move away from rigid patterns of thought. Executive function helps govern attention, planning, self-control, and goal-directed behavior.
These findings are especially interesting in the context of the traditional Kanna experience. The feeling of becoming less trapped in repetitive thoughts and more capable of engaging with the present moment may have measurable cognitive dimensions alongside the emotional experience.
Calmness Without Mental Dullness
In a randomized, double-blind study of 60 participants using quantitative EEG measurements, researchers observed changes in electrical brain activity during cognitive tasks, including changes involving alpha-frequency activity. The researchers interpreted the overall pattern as consistent with greater relaxation alongside cognitive engagement, although EEG findings should not be simplified into direct claims that a specific brain wave automatically reduces depression or improves memory.
This balance is one of Kannaās most distinctive characteristics: calm without heaviness, energy without frantic stimulation, and emotional openness without mental disconnection.
Studied for Daily Use
Kanna has also been examined under repeated daily use. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled safety study, healthy adults received either 8 mg or 25 mg of standardized Kanna extract once daily for three months. Both doses were reported as well tolerated, and some participants spontaneously recorded positive experiences related to well-being, coping with stress, and sleep in their study diaries.
The research is still developing, and different Kanna extracts can vary significantly in their alkaloid composition and potency. Still, the convergence between traditional knowledge, modern pharmacology, brain imaging, cognitive testing, and controlled human research makes Kanna an especially compelling plant.
The traditional language speaks of calmness, connection, endurance, and a lifting of the spirit. Modern science speaks of serotonin signaling, PDE4 inhibition, threat circuitry, cognitive flexibility, and executive function. They are different languages, but they may be describing different dimensions of the same remarkable plant.
A Plant You Can Feel
Many botanical medicines are subtle. Their benefits may emerge gradually, quietly, and only after consistent use.Ā Kanna can be remarkably different.
Its effects can often be experienced within the same session, which is one reason this plant has developed such a passionate following. At the same time, some people choose to work with Kanna consistently as part of a broader practice centered on mood, calmness, focus, and emotional connection. Again and again, people who take Kanna have reported noticing positive significant changes in one or more areas including mood, calmness, empathy, sleep, focus, or energy. Ā
And hereās the best part ā all of these clinically validated benefits were shown using Kanna at roughly half the potency of a single scoop of Spirit Visions Kanna HapĆ©.
